About Us

The South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) is responsible for protecting the South Australian community from the effects of fire, road crashes, chemical incidents and other emergencies. We are a team of approximately 1,300 operational personnel and corporate professionals serving the Community across 20 metropolitan and 17 regional fire stations.

About the Role

The Instructional Designer - Special Operations plays a key role in creating innovative, high-quality digital learning solutions to strengthen MFS hazardous materials (hazmat) response capability.
Working within the Learning and Development Department (L&D), this position applies contemporary instructional design principles to develop engaging eLearning modules, videos, simulations, and blended learning resources tailored to operational needs.
You will collaborate closely with subject matter experts, trainers, and project teams to design evidence-based content that supports critical incident preparedness and aligns with MFS standards and adult learning best practice.

About You
  • Extensive experience in end-to-end design and development of digital and blended learning programs, preferably in technical, operational, or high-risk environments.
  • Advanced capability in applying instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, SAM) and adult learning principles to create engaging, learner-focused content.
  • Proficiency with digital learning tools and platforms such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, and Moodle.
  • Strong analytical skills to translate complex technical material into clear, outcome-focused learning resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently, with excellent organisational and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience collaborating with subject matter experts and influencing diverse stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge of competency-based training frameworks and familiarity with national training packages or public safety training standards (desirable).
  • Skills in visual or multimedia design (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, video editing, animation) will be highly regarded.

$98,478 - $104,165

Special Conditions

Engagement will be subject to a satisfactory Emergency Services Sector Criminal History Check.
