About Kirrawe Indigenous CorporationKirrawe is a First Nations-led organisation, with many years of experience in Indigenous child and family welfare, justice, and community-led programs. We are committed to cultural safety and are guided by the Universal Principle and the 10 Child Safe Standards.
Key Duties
As a volunteer teacher/tutor, you will:
- Work one-on-one or in small groups with young people to improve literacy, numeracy, and general learning skills.
- Support young people in building confidence and re-engaging with education.
- Collaborate with staff, Elders, and other volunteers to create a culturally safe and positive learning environment.
- Participate in training provided by Kirrawe to understand trauma-aware and culturally safe teaching approaches.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow Kirrawe's Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy.
Skills and Experience
- Experience teaching or tutoring (formal or informal) is highly valued.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with young people.
- Good communication skills and a willingness to follow cultural guidance from Elders.
- Ability to commit to regular volunteer hours (to be discussed with you).
- Hold a current Blue Card (or be eligible to apply).
Benefits of Volunteering with Us

- Gain experience working in a culturally rich and community-led environment.
- Receive training and support in trauma-aware, culturally safe education.
- Be part of a team committed to creating real, positive change.
- Opportunity for personal growth, cultural learning, and meaningful contribution.
The Impact You'll Have
Your time and skills will directly support young people to build the confidence and skills they need to thrive in education and life. By helping them improve their literacy and numeracy, you are helping to create pathways away from disengagement and towards a stronger future connected to culture, family, and opportunity.
Trauma-aware and culturally safe teaching approaches training will be provided along with cultural induction.
Time requiredTime commitment: minimum 2-4 hours per week (weekdays, during school hours), ideally for a minimum of one school term.
