Job Purpose
The Financial Controller will lead the university's financial management, reporting, and compliance functions to ensure strong fiscal control, accountability, and transparency. The role involves overseeing budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and internal controls, while supporting strategic planning and decision-making across academic and administrative departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards and university policies.
- Manage the annual budget process, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and funding requirements.
- Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and provide strategic insights to leadership for effective decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, statutory, and audit requirements, including those from government and accreditation bodies.
- Oversee internal controls, risk management, and financial policies to safeguard university assets.
- Lead and develop the finance team, promoting efficiency, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Support grant management, research funding, and donor-related financial reporting.
- Collaborate with department heads to improve financial literacy and accountability across the university.
- Liaise with external auditors, banks, and regulatory agencies as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- Professional accounting qualification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CIMA, or CA).
- Minimum of 10 years of financial management experience, ideally within higher education or the public/nonprofit sector.
- Strong knowledge of accounting standards (IFRS or GAAP) and financial management systems.
- Experience with university funding models, grants, and multi-stream revenue management preferred.
