Empirical Solutions is seeking a highly skilled Finance Officer to provide financial management, policy advice, and governance support across complex Defence programs.
This role is ideal for a finance professional with strong Defence or government experience who thrives in dynamic environments requiring precision, analytical insight, and proactive stakeholder engagement. You will play a key role in ensuring compliance, efficiency, and integrity across financial and procurement activities.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Finance Officer, you will:
- Provide expert advice and guidance on financial management, budgeting, and procurement policy
- Develop and maintain financial governance frameworks, instructions, and templates
- Manage budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting to ensure compliance with applicable regulations
- Undertake detailed analysis of complex financial issues, identify risks, and recommend corrective actions
- Review and implement financial and procurement processes that drive consistency and compliance across operations
- Support audit activities, conduct financial investigations, and assist with remediation actions
- Prepare financial reports, status updates, and management documentation to inform leadership decisions
- Deliver financial training and advice to team members and stakeholders as required
- Supervise and mentor junior finance staff during key financial cycles
- Monitor policy changes and ensure accurate integration into financial and procurement processes
What We're Looking For
We welcome applications from professionals who bring:
- In-depth knowledge of Defence or government accounting and financial management systems
- Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (Defence ERP experience highly desirable)
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and review financial policies and procedures
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver under tight deadlines
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and the ability to provide high-level financial advice to decision-makers
Qualifications & Certifications
- Tertiary qualification in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, or Business
- Certification or membership with a relevant professional body (CPA, CA, or equivalent) desirable
- Knowledge of FMA Act, PGPA Act, and Commonwealth Procurement Rules (CPRs) as they relate to Defence financial transactions
- NV1 security clearance (mandatory)
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
You'll be highly regarded if you also bring:
- Experience working in support of systems program offices or large government programs
- Familiarity with Defence financial governance, procurement, and audit processes
- Understanding of project accounting and capability sustainment finance models
- Experience integrating financial management systems and reporting frameworks
